Mapping The Binding of River: The Mississippi River has been “controlled” for years to ensure the safety of its residence in the lower portion of Louisiana. The map created by Louise Cheetham and myself marks a series of infrastructures that control the massive moving water in the Mississippi. The map introduces a journey beginning just north of New Orleans at the Sunshine Bridge and continuing to the Old River Locks north of New Roads. It is a journey for one day, but could be best if taken two.
The following images are constructed to introduce and pull people to the “Power of Controlling The Mighty Mississippi River.” Louise and I worked with the concept of the irony that each of these structures do actually control the River. There is a contradicting illusion of safety that people may possess that reside in Louisiana, especially along the Lower Mississippi region. Do these work? Comments Please. Are these compelling to you, and are you intrigued to travel River Road to experience these structures and the “control” man holds over the natural landscape?
